Can I apply for citizenship from abroad?

If a person's ancestors were persecuted in 1933 and 1945 for political, racial or religious reasons, then the person can also apply for German citizenship from abroad. In these cases, the applicant's place of residence can therefore also be abroad.

If a person's ancestors were persecuted in the years between 1933 and 1945 for political, racial or religious reasons, the citizenship application can also be filed from abroad.

In these cases, the application can be either filed by the applicant with the German consulate abroad or by a German based law firm on behalf of the applicant directly with the German naturalisation authorities.

The second option is often better, as it gives more control and better tracking option. Also, the lawyer will usually pre-check the application, which also enhanced the chances of success.
