Can the spouse of a Blue Card holder convert her visa into a permanent residence permit?

Depending on the personal circumstances, a Blue Card holder can apply after 21 or 33 months for a permanent residence permit. If the spouse can apply, depends on her or her personal circumstances. Usually, the waiting period is 60 months.

If the assignee is married, also his or her spouse will be entitled to further stay and work in Germany.

In general, the spouse  will also be entitled to apply for a PR permit. 

Nevertheless, the waiting period for the same depends on her personal circumstances:

Should the spouse hold a university degree and work on a Blue Card job, then he or she would typically underlays the same waiting periods as a Blue Card holder (21 or 33 months, depending on her German language skills).

Should the spouse - however - not work / be a housewife, then the waiting period defined by law is  60 months. Also, profound German language skills are a must in this case.

Just to clarify: The above spouse rules also apply, if the main Blue Card holder has already converted his permit into a permanent residence permit.
