What is the difference between a dependency visa and a family reunion visa?

When filing an application for a spouse visa, the Consulate might come up with a request to define the visa category.

The two available cathegories are dependency visa and a family reunion visa.

A dependency visa application is required, if the dependents are travelling in parallel or only shortly after the applicant (max 6 months), while a family reunion visa is required, if the family members are following at a later stage (more than 6 months).

A family reunion visa takes a longer time, as the German immigration authorities have to be involved in the decision.
